Put a sign up saying yours free if you remove it. Post a similar sign on a community bullitan board. There are people who want those rocks. I wander if a landscaping company would come and scoop them away to reuse in another job?

How about freecycle? Bet you could find folks. Or try the extension office, the master gardeners there.

there's enough of us out there who'd show up with buckets and barrows and cut down on the problem at least :)

two years ago, the renter two doors down poured 7 bags of marble chips in the front bed of their house (just big enough to sit a minicooper on) and then moved on two months later.

last spring, nice young couple bought the house, and I found the poor girl out there with a spade and a muck bucket, trying to get rid of the chips. I produced a bucket and a shovel, the lady in between us produced a wheelbarrow and another spade, she lined her whole drip line, I turned the runoff divot from my front downspout into a dry stream, and we carted the rest of it down the block and filled in a neighbor's stone-d front bed.

took us three or four days to get down to the black plastic, but it was good work, we got to know our new neighbor, and discovered there was a nice stand of bulbs languishing under the plastic that came up merrily this spring.

I'd take a station wagon's worth of them, and bed them in cement right over the top of my ugly back 'porch' which has all the personality of the cinderblock it's made of ;)
