designing an arts and crafts style garden

Hi, I am a new member and fairly new to gardening. I inherited a perennial garden when I purchased my current home eight years ago and have managed to keep it alive and to slowly transform it and the remaining landscaping to my liking. I am now in the process of building a new house, which should be completed in March 2006. The house is a take off on an Arts and Crafts four square and I would like to design the gardens and landscaping to be true to the time period - which could be fairly open, say between 1910 and 1930. I am interested in planting perennials, shrubs and a few small trees - the lot size is approximately 1/3 of an acre. I want to be able to maintain whatever is planted using only organic fertilizers, etc. If anyone would care to recommend books on designing period gardens or specific plantings, I would be most appreciative. Thanks!
