Persimmon Tree? (Denver)

Has anyone tried an American persimmon in the Denver area? Or an Asian/American hybrid?

I guess Denver is too cold for pure Asian varieties. I wonder if the American variety or hybrid is hardy enough for this area.

And if so, how does it taste?

RE: Persimmon Tree? (Denver)

I planted a Rosseyenka persimmon last spring (25% asian, 75% american hybrid). Could only get a little whip, as there don't seem to be many suppliers. Also available is Nikita's Gift, a 50/50 hybrid; there's a much better selection of vendors, but I think it's really on the margin here. Pure American varieties should definitely survive the winters here; I don't know of anyone growing one in the area, though, so I don't know how well they'll do in our alkaline soil.

As for how it tastes, I'll have to get back to you in 3 to 5 years. ;)
