In praise of Piel de Sapo melon

I didn't have a whole lot to brag about this past year. The one thing that did totally surprise me was the Piel de Sapo melons I planted. Because of personal issues last spring and summer, everything was planted late, transplanted late, or simply left to get root-bound. I only had a few melons get ripe, and then the squirrels got them just before.

The one bright spot were my Piel de Sapo melons. They were picked unripe just before the frost came and put in a box in my kitchen with some other winter squash. Just last week we got into the melons and they were luscious! One of my sons ate it down to the rind and let me tell you, what was left really did look like a toad skin.

I was inspired to try them when I found this blog last spring: http://theextremegardener.com/blog/?tag=melons

They will be on my "must grow" list from now on.
