Severely Construction damaged yard

This week I had a new sewer line installed which completely upended my tiny backyard. Now that the new pipes have been covered up, the good top soil is now mostly under the stuff that was 10 feet down, heavy clay. A friend recommended a green cover crop to help with soil enhancement while I wait to see what grading issues might need to be corrected before permanent plantings. I also need some erosion protection as I have a slightly sloped yard, or did before the deere arrived in my yard. Any ideas on the best cover crop for this area, would prefer an annual, but clearly need something tough as the conditions are less than ideal.
