Coffea arabica

Okay...I love horticultural novelties. So here's a question...Has anyone grown coffee as a house plant? If so, was it grown from seed or was the plant ordered from Hawaii or elsewhere? If it was started from seed what were the steps used to get the seed to germinate?

I wasn't familiar with that, so I googled it and came up with this really helpful site. I think you'll probably get a really good "personal experience" response if you post this one on the House Plants forum. But then be sure you come back to us on RMG! ;-)
Here is a link that might be useful: How to grow your own coffee plant

Thanks... I have looked at most everything relating to coffee plants that google listed (most all that wasn't too technical). I was just trying to get someone's opinion. I'll post this on the House Plants forum. Don't worry, I'll be back to the Rocky Mountains.

I did buy a plant at home depot. It is living on my kitchen counter. It seems to want lots of water and indirect light. I am not the best with houseplants so we will see how long it lasts.

Actually it was in Greeley.

My mom had a coffee house plant in Washington State, but I think it was passed down from a friend. It grew in our living room (west facing?) in poor lighting, which is probably why it was a little on the lanky side. It was over 5 feet tall and produced berries.

We have a 12 year old Kona Coffee tree in our living room that was grown from seed 'smuggled' back from Maui years ago. I can't remember the last time it was not in fruit or flower, and has not been outside in the last 8 years. I have found that they are a very 'tough' plant to germinate, but a very 'easy' plant to maintain, once you get them going! They like to be dried out between waterings to the point of flagging, especially in winter. If you do a search for 'Kona', you will find some pics of my plant that I have posted in the past. |
