Today in the garden, I'm....

| Digging up 4 old rose bushes that the good part above the graft died and are all shooting that dark red velvet rose that constitutes the root stock. Then working in the compost into the veggie beds, if the wind doesn't start up. Right now, I dug up 4 of those thorny, dark redish bushes that look good in somebody else's yard but here have maintained a foot high height perfect for scratching the heck out of bare ankles, and I'm taking a breather, because they had some serious roots on them. |

| And what might you be planning to do tomorrow, David? And Thursday, perchance? Shoveling snow possibly? ;-) Skybird |
RE: Today in the garden, I'm....

| BLOWING AWAY!!! So I decided to go over to the old trailer/storage unit and find some more pots to pot everything up to. Also had to plant my tomotoes. Yes I am behind, but no one loaned me their greenhouse :~)... Sterizing right now, hoping to start soon. Billie |

| RIP, Dr. Huey! I rode my young horse and checked on cattle in a huge pasture. Great day! Wish I had a camera that I could pack along with me... Now I need to see if I can get router figured out so I can build the doors for my Casa Verde (wingin' it on the Spanglish). Also would like to see if the new power weed sprayer works - I need to do some Roundin' Up. Cheers, Michelle |

| I discovered I have a lower back that hasn't been used much these last few months. And Skybird, that 70% chance of snow tomorrow is just a joke, I mean, sheesh, 3" accumulation? Well ¡Snort! Oh, that really dark cloud where the western horizon should be? Thats one of those Christo art thingies. |
RE: Today in the garden, I'm....
| | |
| LOL, David! I wanna see that "Christo art thingie!" I'm not sure I've seen that one before! So you think you're getting away with only 3" this time, huh? Even Denver is under a WINTER storm watch, starting at 1800 tomorrow. Well, as of right now you're on the far western edge of the storm, so maybe you'll luck out. Fingers crossed for you, and---batten down the hatches just in case, Skybird |

| So should I fill the bathrubs and prep the generator?? Hoping to see some rain out of this. The pasture is really dry and the garden could use a good "spring cleaning". Enjoy the weather, whatever it May bring, Cheers!! Billie |

| Watching the little green sprouts in dozens of peat pots fall over and die. They're all in nice window boxes hubby built but with over 10 inches of snow so far today, they're hanging on by a thread. Hubby bought a couple of little fans which circulate air from the room into the boxes so the sprouts aren't giving up because of the cold. They're just getting too long and leggy to survive since we haven't had good sun for days and days. Gail |

| Glad for the moisture, just wishing that the wind had not blown it all to Mexico (yes its howling strong enought here to make it to the gulf, with my shingles). Hope there is still something to go out to next week when it warms back up. Billie |

Gosh, today... I'm looking at all my new snow and making a harumph sound. And, I'm looking at it through the window 'cause it is cold, cold cold. Glad though that our usual gale force breeze is not actually here but sorry you've got it, Billie! |

| Today, I'm goin' to the big veggie garden and rescue Sweet William & Herbs who have spent the Winter there! The Rototiller Man may be comin' soon! Yesterday, I got a little more ground prepped in the little veggie garden. The warmth reached a glorious 56°F! It was a beautiful afternoon but I went home fairly early. DW was complaining. I wasn't sure if I would be able to get out of the Lazy Boy once I sat down. I often retrograde 6 months in my mind and reflect on that time, a little. It was the beginning of another season - Autumn. The weather was so pleasant as the days were cooling and the cold just still hadn't come. A very warm start to the Fall. On the 12th of October 2007, the morning low was 44°!! Most of our April highs have been in the 40's and we finished March at 11° below normal . . . But today, it is another beaaauuutiful day! dititS' |

| I finally got the grass in the backyard pulled out where the veggies will go and put in the bricks to separate it from the grass. Now I just need to get about 8 bags of compost tilled in and it will be all ready to get the peas planted and then the warmer season veggies. Now I'm pooped and sunburned, but it was so worth it. | I put down a bag of CGM on the yard today, and I noticed it is not only greening up, but actually growing. I may even have to pull out the lawn mower in another week or so. It's hard to believe it's that time again! The only other things I accomplished were moving a couple of perennials around, planting thyme in the herb garden, checking on my wintersown sprouts, and finishing spring cleanup of my perennial beds. The extra wet winter caused a few causualties, so it's a good thing I have plenty of wintersown sprouts to help fill in those empty spots, though I'll admit I did place an order for a few things from Bluestone. This afternoon, my younger two children were running and rolling around in the yard laughing hysterically, and it was great just seeing how much pleasure they get from just being outside after being cooped up all winter. A truly beautiful day! Bonnie |

| We've got our irrigation water now, and so far today I've planted 2 dozen geraniums in window boxes and 2 huge bundles of leeks in the garden. Left to do, untangle a ridiculous mess of shallot roots in 12 x 2" pots from my first ever time growing them from seed, and ponder where to put 2 bundles of onion. Tomatoes seeds are up and about, and I'm taking the whole tray with several hundred seedlings in and out of the sun and breeze. |

Crying.....Not just for myself with my measely 4" of snow, but for all you other gardeners who received even more! Somewhere under the new snow, out along the greenhouse, are the newly sprouted peas. Little buggers were about 1" tall yesterday in 65* afternoon sun. I don't think I'll ever get used to the Montana spring. How has everyone else faired the latest stormfront? |
RE: Today in the garden, I'm....

| Today in the garden ... I did absolutely nothing! High wind advisories all weekend. Spent the day yesterday edging my newest bed with the stones my DH picked up for me, and the winds were a bit annoying, but today they were just plain ridiculous. Sustained winds of 20 - 35 mph, with wind gusts up to 50 mph. Tomorrow the winds are forecast for 20 - 30 mph, then they should calm down for a while. Mtgrower, at least with snow you are getting much needed moisture, and I bet your peas will be just fine under the snow. Bonnie |

| No snow here, just lotsa wind. Today I'm closer to being ready. Veggie bed expansion was finished yesterday (and I finally got the pics off my camera). From this
and finally
Today we put in a bed along the front walk (stage 1). The plan is for a curve going all the way to the sidewalk to the property line.

| Nice pictures! I like the 'Herbs' sign! Whatcha gonna plant in that nice new bed? Cheers, Michelle |
RE: Today in the garden, I'm....

| Thanks! The sign was from a neighbor. She kept asking what was planted there, could never remember that it was herbs. She saw the sign and had to get it for me. That bed will have tomatoes, peppers, scarlet runner beans on the trellis', cucumbers and maybe okra if it will fit. I have yellow squash and zucchini seeds, but don't think there will be room there, especially since I really want as many tomatoes and peppers as I can. Dafy |

| mtngardner, dont worry about you peas. You,ve seen mine in the other pea thread. They've been snowed on several times since planting, and they are doing great. In the office today wishing I could be home working on the garden. Yesterday I had to work on the flower beds out front. Was spending so much time on the veggie garden that out front had gotton out of control. Needed to do something before the city said "Do something NOW, or we will and charge you!". Still, that beats the heck out of an HOA. |

Today I planted half my potatoes (finally), but they were growing just fine in the bag, honest! LOL Anyway, my DH's cousin sent me this really neat e-mail about a daffodil garden and I just had to go play. I was supposed to be working on an essay that is due Friday. It's nice not working at my old job, but I really miss the income and having an adult to talk to once in a while (DH is not an adult). I also planted the rest of the bare root strawberries that I got a while back, hope they make it, but if not, oh well. Found a salamander while I was digging in the BIG compost pile out back. Suprised I did not hurt him. He was in the wheelbarrow when I found him. DH took my little manure piles that were across the back a few years ago and made one pile that is about 8'-10' tall and probably about 20' in diameter, so that is what I am digging right now. And there is NO WAY I am turning it. Also killed my first rattlesnake today, in the garden even. I think he came out of hibernation and found his home gone. I moved a big pile of lumber over the winter and found the snake in the same place as the lumber was two months ago. Too bad, so sad. Sorry, I will happily let any other snake live, but a rattler dies on sight. I was raised in Arizona. Billie |

| Dafy, all I know is tomatoes take a LOT of room. I always end up with them too darned close. I think if they do well for you, they will eat that bed for lunch. :-) Scarlet runner beans are fun. I should plant some of those, too... Cheers, Michelle |

Dafy, you can get a LOT more in if you grow your tomatoes UP rather than out! I pound four 6' stakes about a foot into the ground around each plant and then tie twine around the stakes every foot or so as the plants grow. I’m able to get 7 plants in a very small space. By the end of summer it gets a little bit cozy when trying to get between them, but with about 18" between plants, I make it work—and come out smelling like tomatoes! Here’s a couple pics. The first is June 18, not too long after they were planted. I looks kinda like a bamboo forest! And the second is the end of July. They do still keep growing when they get to the top and just kind of flop over the top loop of twine, which I make 3 or 4 layers thick so it has enough strength to hold whatever flops over. (Click to enlarge)
Today in the garden I—stayed out of the garden! My robins are building their nest on top of the electrical box on the back of my house, and last year I apparently upset them and they packed up their half finished nest and moved it somewhere else, so I trying to get them to stay this year. Once she lays the eggs they won’t pack up and move anymore, so I’ll be able to go out there again! My yard is temporarily quarantined! Skybird |

| The best part is smelling like tomatoes; that's my favorite smell in the world. It's about 18 feet across and 5 feet deep on the left side. It's got manure, sheep & peat and claybuster composty mixed in. I have 8 seeds wintersowed of 5 different varieties of tomatoes. I hope to get at least 2 good plants of each for me and send some to mom's garden. Then I have 8 seeds of 6 kinds of peppers. Definitely planning on training them up as much as possible. I'm staying away from the WSing containers for a couple of days. Today in the garden I planted Sea Lavender, Blue Marguerite, Wallflower and petunias in the new walkway bed. Then planted 4 tulips and a lily in the gargoyle bed. I went to Nick's for the compost and manure above and left with the tulips & lily (5 for $25). Then went to HD for construction adhesive and left with the other plants (I think I need to stop parking by the garden center entrance). Dafy |

| Today in the garden ... I planted out my first wintersown sprouts. One container of Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli (I'm saving the other one as a backup), Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce, Parris Island Cos Lettuce, and one container of Alyysum 'Golden Queen'. The wind is supposed to be back again tomorrow, so I made plastic collars from the 2L bottles the sprouts were in, to give them a little protection for a few days. Maybe if I'm lucky they will keep the cutworms out too. I sowed what I think will be the last of my wintersown containers today too - basils, zinnias, and perilla. It's a good thing I'm done now, since DH just drew up the plans for the pergola and got an estimate on materials. All of my containers are on the patio where the pergola is going, so I either have to plant everything out very soon, or find another home for them, which won't be easy. Skybird, thanks for those tomato pictures! That is about the spacing I was planning for my tomatoes, so I'm glad to know that it can work. I will definitely be staking and pruning the suckers to keep things under control. From what I've read lurking over on the tomato forum, it may mean fewer tomatoes per plant, but I think I would rather be able to try several different varieties, than to have a whole bunch of one or two kinds of tomatoes. If I use the 18" spacing, I think I can squeeze in 6 plants in my tiny garden, plus a couple in the Earthbox I bought. Happy planting everyone! Bonnie |

| Saturday I spent 5 hours getting my oldest ready for her first prom (boys have it so easy; it only took her date 30 minutes to get ready). Yesterday in the garden I sowed beets, radishes, carrots and lots of lettuce; and added a German Winter Thyme, French Thyme and a Rosemary to the Herb bed. I still need to start the other, more tender, herb seeds. |

| Today, I'm waiting to go off to the dentist and trying to distract myself (without getting dirty, you know how it is ;o). Yesterday, I planted peas, peas, peas. This, despite the fact that my cue, the blooming of the Oregon grape, still hasn't occurred. The way I figure it - this unseasonable cool weather has lasted so late and the Weather Service is predicting a "normal" Spring . . . that it just HAS to warm up soon, and a lot! There's stormy weather to the east and a 70% chance here. I hope it arrives and gives us some moisture. It will really help the bok choy & lettuce transplants and the herb plants I returned to the garden after the rototiller passed thru. Thunderstorms are a possibility, too. That's good 'cause it will scare the peas up. d'S' |
RE: Today in the garden, I'm....

| I spent a little time yesterday installing a pressure-reducing valve on my sprinkler system, weeding around roses and shrubs, and getting ready to spread five yards of compost in the beds as a top dressing. I'm worrying a bit right now about my fruit trees. It's going to be 80 degrees today but a cold storm comes in tomorrow, which might even bring snow at night. My nectarine is in full bloom, and the cherries are mostly there, too. We already had a couple of mid-20's nights last week, but I think the blossoms made it through. I hope this weird, long La Nina winter doesn't ruin most of my fruit this year! |
RE: Today in the garden, I'm....

| Forecast here for Thus. night is 23º. My plums and apricot are already toast, but I still have my fingers crossed for the peaches and apple trees. |
