shrub suggestions

does anyone have any thoughts about a tallish, long-blooming, preferably fragrant shrub to fill in a part-shade corner along a walkway? the space is about 3-4 feet square. i transplanted a rose there but it doesn't look to be coming back, and my hubby is a little particular about thorns anyway. are thornless roses really thornless?
