I have never used a heat mat, Rathdrum. Is the soil temperature much above 70F?

Arugula has been in my garden for about 3 years now. It is really a cool-season plant. They aren't in the same genus but seem a lot like a radish to me. The 50F sounds fine.

What about damping-off; did the plants' stems turn brown and kind of fold at the soil line?

I would hazard a guess that perhaps your soil was too warm and too wet and your seedlings damped off. Arugula does like the cooler weather.

I wintersowed my Arugula at the end of January. It sprouted at the end of February. This is my first try at wintersowing but so far, so good...

I may be having the same problems, though I might be confusing my Kale for arugula. I had to restart a bunch of seeds recently, but I think mine was because they got too much real sunlight too early.
