Not too late at all! Go ahead and start. If your soil is warm enough, you can direct-seed tomatoes.

For the kale and brussels sprouts, you can start them and put them out around July or so. They should give you good veggies throughout the fall until the temps get really, really cold. You can also direct seed them now.

I have not yet grown them in Colorado. The above is more or less what I did in Oregon. In Oregon, kale and brussels sprouts provide food all winter and into the spring because the temps don't go below zero. I don't know if you can overwinter them here. They are very cold-tolerant vegetables, among the hardiest.

Give it a try, You have nothing to loose except the seed and some fun. Those garden center plants are very suspect, for name, disease, and even what they are.

You can certainly start things from seed but with tomatoes, assuming you're in zone5 or colder, you may not get much harvest. If you're in the Denver area I have a friend who still has about 150 tomato plants left. I also probably have 20 extras if you're interested.

Maybe you might not get tomatoes, but the way the weather has been, you might get to pick tomatoes in December (Okay, maybe a little optimistic there!) But with a little protection, you might be able to baby those late toms through the "early" frost and into the Indian summer. I'd give it a shot for sure.

I actually took cuttings from one of my plants that was a late start last year and it looks like it will be the first to start this year. Maybe cuz it is technically a year older than the rest??
