Conflicting info from nurseries - shrub for west facing area

Hi all - I'm a transplant from NJ and new at CO gardening (and gardening in general). I purchased a home with a blank slate backyard. It is west facing. I've put in a deck and pergola and would like to wrap part of the deck (3/4 around the west and north side) to cover a neighbors fence and the "dog area" part of the yard. My original thought was Korean Spice Viburnum (viburnum carlesii) but have gotten opposing opinions from the nurseries here due to the amount of hot daytime sun.

I'm open to any suggestions and want 3 seasons of interest. I love red twig dogwood and have other areas of the yard I'll be putting in Artic Fire and Mid-Winter shrubs. I think putting any more in would be overkill.

any ideas of suggestions are appreciated!

Peg
