Enjoying WS lettuce & so are tiny crawlers

We've been enjoying a nice crop of winter sown lettuce ( Thanks Bonnie!) since a month ago. About a couple of weeks ago I started noticing holes in the leaves. It has gotten progressively worse and the lettuce is starting to look like lacey Swiss cheese now. Today I harvested a big bowl and saw teeny tiny green caterpillars. By the time I was done rinsing the swiss cheese lettuce for dinner, I stopped counting at 15 caterpillars. I still fed them to my fella and we enjoyed them. Hopefully I got rid of all of the tiny green munchers! otherwise we just had some extra protein.

So my questions is what the heck are they since they're so tiny and what do you all do to prevent this or at least reduce the numbers because I think picking out at least 15 crawlers is a little much! Moreover there were some leaves that were just stems! Is there a spray I could use that is safe?
