Dang Elms

I planted a new lawn in my back yard. I used some grass seed called Pearl's Premium. It's slower growing grass seed that once established only needs to be mowed and watered once a month. :) Anyhoo....when it was still in the "keep moist" stage while waiting to sprout the neighbors dang elm tree shed it seed pods and now I have a million elm trees coming up!!! Any advice on how to handle this. Do you think that once I start mowing the elms will die off or am I going to have to go out and pull them all up one by one?

I think you are going to have to pull every one. Sorry. Maybe weed spray?
I wish some one had told me to put a cover over my raised beds when the elm seeds were falling. I now have a solid green layer of elms in each one.

I feel your pain Kenny! I wonder if weed killer for grass would work. I consider an elm a weed. ;)

You might try dandelion killer. (24D) Remember weed killers work best when the plant is growing the fastest. So let them get a nice start and then try.

You don't want to spray 2,4-D on grass thats less than a year old. You'll kill it.

The lawn/grass I've planted, it looks more like a weed patch the first year. And every time I'm tempted to spray it, I kill it, even in September.

But wait until the second year, spray it then, and it works fine.

Perhaps you can start your own Tree Farm ;)

I hadn't heard of this grass but it sounds great. I'd love to see what it looks like up close. Have you seen it IRL or just read about it?

It's kind of expensive, so I hope you get the mini trees under control.

Sorry about the delay in responding to your post aloha...I have been on vacation. Here is the URL: http://www.pearlspremium.com/
I actually found some other grass seed I like the look of better and it says you never have to water or mow!! I bought some and plan on doing my front yard with it this Fall. http://www.cuttingedgegrass.com/new/

As for the Pearl's...it is coming in thicker now but still slow going. I imagine I should have a nice back yard next year. I will hold off til then to spray for the weeds and elms. I have been going out and pulling some here and there and at this rate it could take me forever. ;)

Celty, now that you will have both lawns in, I'm very interested in hearing what you think! I'll be sure to check this thread overtime to see if you've reposted.

It's hard to tell what these grasses look like online. The Pearls at least had some legit reviews explaining the pros and cons. Have you read anything for the CuttingEdge besides the advertisements?

I've got a very small patch that I'd love to have some grass like this. If something like this would work, we'd skip some of the ground cover.

Hi Aloha, I don't have both lawns in yet. I will do the front yard with the Cutting Edge this fall....that's the plan anyway. The back yard with the Pearl's continues to fill in. I have got quite a few of the elms pulled. It's actually quite relaxing to just lay down in the grass and pull them. It's the Elm meditation!
