Too fast draining?

I got almost an inch of rain Sunday, ending bout 730pm. Monday was clear, 70s; by 3pm the top two inches of soil in my new flower bed was bone dry, just a hint of darkness at the bottom.

I had a soil test done, they said sandy loam, and I added the recommended compost - 2-3" - in the Spring before I planted new perennials. The rec was to do so for 2-3 years.

I think my decision to go with annuals from direct sow seed - found out about WS too late for this year - combines with this fast drain soil to mean my new perennials probably have shallow root systems developing.I've actually been using a watering can to try and avoid getting too much water too close to perennials while keeping seedlings moist.

Anyone know of anything I can do at this stage other than water when dry and live with what happens this year? Will adding 2-3" in the Fall help a lot? Should I also add compost in the Spring and again in the Fall.

Am I just being obsessive, flashing my newbie nerves when everything is OK?
