Dianthus flowering

Hi all,

Hope you are all having a great summer! Sorry about the easy question, but I just wanted to make sure I'm getting the most out of these guys this summer. From what I've read other places, deadheading Dianthus will keep them blooming all summer long. However, I did this last summer and they never really came back well....always looked kinda half dead with all the browning tips and such. Therefore, should I just cut them way back once the flowers fade, or is it really just best to snip the fading flower heads off? (Plus, snipping the flower heads can take forever since there are so many!)

Thanks a bunch! Happy gardening!

Finn
