It can destroy the structure of the soil if you work it when it's wet. It'll probably be dry enough in a day or two.

Charlene, I'm not much of a science expert, but my understanding is that it ruins the tilthe of the soil, meaning it basically turns it into concrete. Dan, or someone else more horticulturally intelligent than myself, will have to explain the science behind it.

If it makes you feel any better, I completely ignored this, planted on Saturday (in the rain, LOL) and today. I added lots of dry compost when I planted each one, so I'm hoping that will help, but at least I got the garden in ... I am pretty much done. Well, except for a few basil sprouts, and a couple of things from the plant swap.

I think I'm going to go out and just tuck some seeds in and around and cover with dry compost (green beans, lettuce, radish, beets).

Charlene, I ran the rototiller 3+ hours a week ago today. We had some 24 hour rain records set in the days, immediately before. Of course, all that means is that we had a few good rainstorms. The records were both for less than an inch.

If your soil drains well, my gravel does even better! Imagine a gravel driveway with some good dirt mixed in. That's about what I've got to work with. (You should be so lucky! ;o)

DW said, "Do you really think you can till out there?" I set the depth for about 2" and killed weeds like crazy without the least problem of getting bogged down. Of course, I had to be real careful about where I put my #13 shoes. I can create something similar to asphalt treading about on wet ground.

After I broke 2 shear pins on the rocks, I went home. It is something of a standard I try to maintain.

I was out there yesterday and today. The soil looks great and where I tilled, nary a weed.
