Hot Papaya

I splurged and bought a new cone flower variety for my garden from O'Tooles about a month ago - Hot Papaya. It's blooming now, and I really love it! It contrasts nicely with my purple ones.

Hoping to collect lots of seeds from the Papaya so I'll have lots more next year, and maybe some to give away at a swap!

This is a pic I took of them about a week ago, it shows the multiple stages. The color here was more orange:

Here's a close up I took tonight. The one is in full bloom now - the middle isn't yellow, like it shows in the picture on the care tag, but maybe it will turn now that it's in full bloom. Even if it doesn't, I sure think it's pretty :) The color has gotten deeper and with more red.

Fun! Anyone else have this variety, or others, of cone flowers?

Wow that is really pretty. You reminded me I planted a white one and it didn't come back this year. :-(

I went crazy with all the new hybrid Echinacea's when I first moved here in '06. I had Summer Sky, Sundown, Sunrise, and Harvest Moon. The first year they looked great, and bloomed beautifully. Each year since then, they come back smaller, or not at all, and what few blooms they have look mutated, smaller and sickly looking, possibly a result of all the grasshoppers.

Wish you the best with yours, but I won't be buying anymore of them!!! BTW, Hot Papaya is a hybrid and likely won't come true from seed.

Oh, now that's disappointing news Bonnie! Gosh, I just never think about that - I guess more and more now, though, it will enter my mind as I'm learning. I sure hope I get more of the same somehow (that is, without buying them every year!). I will see what happens ...

A few of my purple coneflowers look a bit mutated as well, while others look fine. Wonder what is affecting the ones that have some twisted and scrawny petals. They are all in the same flower bed, so I wouldn't think it would be the amount of sun and/or water as they are all getting pretty much the same.
