cherry tree

Does anyone have a sour cherry tree (don't know the name)? Have you ever trimmed it. Our tree is getting out of hand and want to cut it back a lot!! Is there a special way to do this? Mostly off the top so we can put the net on it again. We'd like to do it after we pick the cherries this yr. (if the hail doesn't get it)
It produces cherries almost every yr. TIA

I have only a bit of tree pruning experience but in general topping a tree is the wrong thing to do. You want to prune branches that cross and also open the tree up so that light penetrates the lower and inside branches.

There are other forums on GardenWeb that may be more helpful.
