Has anyone had good luck with broad beans/fava beans in the RM area. My wife is from England were they are a favorite crop. In my opinion, very tasty but a whole lot of work to prepare. You can buy them in the store for an obscene price especially considering how much you throw away.

Since I started this, Dsieber, I will tell you about broad bean bad luck.

Only tried them once and planted about a 30' row, very early. They grew well but before I was prepared, we were hit by heat of summer! The plants were swarmed by aphids!

This was before I had discovered the great value of insecticidal soap against aphids. There was a crop but unfamiliarity and the aphid experience/inexperience kept me from growing them again.

I grow Windsor fava beans.

Eh, they're iffy, but still worth doing if you have the space. Plant them at the same time with peas in the early spring. I get some bacterial disease on them that puts black spots all over the pods, but the actual beans are ok. They are indeed aphid magnets, but by the time they get big enough to produce, the lady bugs are all over them. This bacteria will also eventually kill the plants.

I don't know what it is, but they seem to have an issue with pollination - the flowers are long and narrow, the plants are covered with them, but very few end up pollenated and producing beans.

Yesterday evening, before the rain started, I stood out in the garden (They are heat sensitive. Some summers, like last summer, that don't have temps in the high 90's, but stay in the 80's, they'll produce all summer.
