Blackberries formed but didn't mature

I live in northern Utah. Last year I moved a thornless blackberry to a better location because it wasn't getting enough sun. Then, this past spring it really took off - exploded, with tons of blossoms, then berries. Then it just stopped. The berries have stopped growing at about a quarter inch. The plant is still growing and putting out lots and lots of new canes, but it has become obvious that I won't be harvesting any berries from that bush. (Another bush is full of large, ripening berries).

I don't know what could have happened, but I'm wondering if it could be that, in early June, we had a cold spell after much warm weather, then a return to warm weather immediately after the cold. Do any of you have any clues for me? Thanks a million,

Carolyn

RE: Blackberries formed but didn't mature

I am by no means a blackberry expert, my first thoughts were:

1) Blackberries like slightly acidic soil. Could the plant have used up all the acid in the soil in it's new spot and now needs a boost from fertilizer or other organic matter? Soil conditions can change within a few feet in a yard!

2) Blackberries do benefit from cross-pollination. Is it too far away from the other bush?

3) Delayed stress due to replanting?

4) The weather this year has been crazy all over the West. Could it just be a crazy weather thing?

You might want to contact your local Extension office for advice.
