help choosing an evergreen shrub

I'd like to plant some type of evergreen shrub in my front flower bed to help camoflauge the bottom part of our arbor structure we put there. I want something that will stay no more than about 3ft high and be compact, rather than spread out or crawling. Or something that takes well to trimming so I can keep it's size in check. It will get a lot of sun.

I'm also open to something deciduous as long as it has some type of branch/other interest to it during the winter months, and will still serve well as camoflauge without it's leaves. The main plant we have planted at this arbor is Wisteria, which will (hopefully) take over the arbor with it's vines in the coming years. The plants I put at the base should compliment or contrast to the Wisteria.

Any ideas would be appreciated!
