Basement screens disintegrating/holes caused by Miller moths?

A few days ago we were shocked to find holes in the screens in our window wells in the basement. There are also lots of small bits of screen--almost looks like they are disintegrating. There is also that telltale yucky orange goopy excretion that I have been told comes from Miller moths.

Has anyone else had this happen, and do you think the moths are the cause?

It's not possible that a bird or rodent has caused the damage, as it is spread from top to bottom on some of the screens. We have tight-fitting window well covers and the only creatures we have ever found in there (and only on rare occasions) were one tiny baby rabbit, one small mole and a mouse; it was years ago they fell in and they either died or were rescued if we found them on time.
