mailing fresh produce out of state?

I was thinking of mailing my daughter in California a few of our fresh veges, ones I think would survive the trip ok - like cucumbers. That may be all I send 'cause that's about all we have right now that she likes. But did just get some cantalope, so that might do ok. 'course, I'll also make up some zucchini bread (found a recipe for chocolate zucchini bread that sounds delightful!) and pack that in as well - that's one way to get her to eat squash ;^)

Has anyone ever checked in to this? I did some internet searching and found a site that basically said you have to check on your state regulations. So far, I can't find any specific info online - and the county extension is closed right now. So thought maybe someone here might know!

Anyone ever done this from Colorado either using USPS or UPS?

I shipped stuff to California via UPS - gleefully ignoring all their warnings about doing so. Whatchado is pack your stuff carefully in a square, sturdy cardboard box, weigh it, then go to the UPS website, create an account, fill in forms and stuff, pay them with a credit card, and print off a label. Then take it to one of those drop off places, or you can pay a bit extra and they'll come pick it up. From here, it took about 5 days to San Diego, but then I live in the middle of no where. Your tomatoes should be just starting to blush, not ripe.

Only once this went wrong, the box 'fell off the truck' somewhere. And I wonder what the thieves must have thought, running down the alley - CD's? Video players? only to open the box and find some squash.

David - that is absolutely shameful of you! And I love it!! :^D

And ha ha to the probable "finders keepers" guys that got your package - but if they indeed did taste the squash, I bet they were happy with their loot!!

So I took your advice, David, and just went for it. I put in a few fresh veges, and a loaf of chocolate zucchini bread, along with some other non-food items. Printed my UPS label online and dropped it off today. Hoping everything make it's there!

The only thing I might add, treat your UPS guy well with fresh tomatoes and stuff to build up the good karma. :-)
