Alice, I've only moved them in the spring, because I read somewhere that you were supposed to move fall bloomers in the spring, and spring bloomers in the fall. I'm not saying it wouldn't work ... I'm just saying : )

BTW, I am still planning on moving that Achillea and sending you a chunk, I'm just a little behind on my garden to do list, since I've been busy learning to can. I'll email you when it goes out, so that you can be on the look-out for it.

I'd be tempted to move it in the spring as well, maybe April / early May - you could divide it as well at that time.

You could do it either now or in spring. If it were meÂand I had timeÂIÂd probably do it now. If now, wait till the flowers freeze, cut it all the way down to a few inches above the ground, dig it up and either divide it or move it whole, replant it in the new location, and water it in well (DEEPLY, so the soil is wet BELOW the roots). Because it wonÂt have any foliage left, it wonÂt be using much water at all, so unless we get a very dry winter, donÂt water again till spring. As long as the soil is wet/damp enough to keep the roots from drying out, itÂll be ok. If you do it now, the roots will be growing all winter, anytime the soilÂs not frozen, so it should take off very nicely in spring.

For right now, though, be ready to cover it whenever theyÂre predicting low temps for the next few weeks if you want to see it really bloom! Because it blooms so late, it always needs to be covered a few times! I love it, and I love the flowers, but because it blooms so late I may be giving mine away at the Spring Swap! When IÂm working, it just isnÂt possible to keep up with covering and uncovering things!

If you decide to move it in spring, I recommend doing it as soon as you see itÂs coming back to life at all. And I still recommend cutting it all the way down after the flowers are goneÂas a matter of fact, if youÂre going to move it in spring, IÂd cut it all the way down to about an inch above the soil. ThatÂs what I do with mine, and it works well.
