Help with a sick Japanese maple

I posted over in the maples forum about my Japanese maple that has a dying section. There are photos in the post. Take a look at the link below, and let me know what you guys think, OK? You can just post over there, but so far it wasn't getting much attention and I knew some of you would respond to it. Maybe you've had a similar problem. Thanks!

I don't know anything about Japanese maples, but a neighbor told me about a weekly radio show with a guy who diagnoses problems by phone descriptions. I've been listening to some of the podcasts and he's pretty impressive.
