Alice, if you can cover the kale, carrots, beets, parsnips, and chard, I think they would all be fine. The butternut squash is less cold tolerant. You might want to try and harvest those if you can.

Parsnips,carrots and beets will take a lot of cold. They can be covered with straw or heavy leaves and dug later in the winter. But it takes a deep layer and if it gets thin at the edges they will freeze. The other problem is that makes a cosy home for mice if you don't have a good cat around the mice will hide under the straw and leaves and munch.
