Crab grass questions

So last spring I tried that corn gluten idea on the crab grass. But I didn't know at the time that it's also found in dog food, and Frisco LOVES it. He ate it all up. At least, I think that why it didn't work.

But I've noticed in the past couple of weeks that the crab grass seems ...wimpy. It doesn't seem as robust as it did earlier in the season. Is that a common process? Does it usually start getting weaker by October? Is there any way to take advantage of that at this time?

Now, I noticed this wimpiness while cleaning up the crabapples under the tree. And it hit me that the only place where the crab grass is particularly bad, is around the crabapple tree!

Could there be a connection of some kind?

During the years of 2001- 2006 before I moved in, I doubt if anyone ever picked up the fallen apples. Could the rotting fruit have damaged the good grass enough so that the more opportunistic crab grass moved in?

Any ideas for getting rid of this nasty stuff would be greatly appreciated!
