I can't find it this morning, but I was recently reading something about the commercial strawberry producers in California - they grow baby plants at a different altitude / environment, then bring them down and transplant them in their fields every year, the climatic shock sends the plants into fruit production over-drive.

It seems a little late to put them outside, but the cold frame sounds like a good idea.

Once they are established, they tolerate the cold pretty well though. I picked a couple ripe strawberries earlier this week, when the lows were already in the 20's.

I'm a bit hesitant to put them in the coldframe at this point though they will probably be okay until the winter solstice. I'm a bit concerned about the hard freezes that are coming. Probably not a good thing to have their container soil freezing and thawing on a regular basis.

Not sure if I'm going to add any electric heat to the coldframes yet but I probably will in the form of Christmas lights.

I think my plan is to leave them inside for now at least until it's time to start peppers and tomatoes indoors. I'm thinking no more than 10 hours of light per day should be okay. Not sure how strawberries know when to fruit I assume it's hours of light.
