You can check craigslist free section or materials. The downside being that they're heavy and you might only get a handful from each person and if you need to drive across the metro area to pickup a few up for free then you're not saving much. My craigslist strategy when I'm looking for something is to keep a CL search page open and refresh it frequently as the good deals are snatched up quickly. You might find someone getting rid of a bunch of them.

There's also freecycle though I haven't used it much.

I second all that! The first thing I thought of was FreeCycle, and since there are lots of groups in the Metro area you could ask for some on several of the ones closest to you, but if you're not already a member on some of them you'd need to find something to "offer" on any you joined before you could post a "wanted."

There's another "recycling system" called ReUseIt with several groups in the area. I belong to the North Denver group and there's virtually no activity on that one--don't know if the others are more active or not.

Other than that there are construction recycling places where you might be able to find them pretty inexpensively. I'd recommend calling places like these to see if they have anything just then, and be ready to go right away if they do. Like Greg said, things can "disappear" pretty quickly!

Habitat for Humanity ReStores could possibly have some or some other type construction "blocks." They have various locations around the Metro area. (copy/paste links! Don't have time to live link them!)

Bud's Warehouse is near I70 and Colorado Blvd., and while I haven't been there--yet, someone very highly recommended it to me and I saw some of the stuff she bought there--cheap! I looked thru some of their pictures and there were some showing pallets of concrete blocks and things like pavers and bricks that they've had at some point, so I think they'd be worth a call.

And the other one I know about is a place somebody here on RMG mentioned once. I went there and they did have a couple pallets of odd size flagstone, but I didn't see any other "brick type" things. I would definitely call before making a trip up to Boulder! (They have a location in Ft. Collins too!)

I don't know if he is still around, but there used to be The Lumber Guy up there. Every time a company was shutting down, he would buy as much as he could from them for pennies on the dollar. Last time I was there (probably 5 years ago) he had mountains of block.
