New ARS Fragrance Certificate

I am very pleased to announce that the ARS Board of Directors at San Diego has approved a new ARS Certificate for "Most Fragrant Rose" to be used by rose societies at their rose shows. I made the proposal to the ARS Prizes & Awards Committee last December and offered to sponsor the initial production of this new ARS Certificate. I felt that a fragrant rose was an important feature at rose shows. The judging criteria will be based upon:

MOST FRAGRANT ROSE
One bloom per stem, without sidebuds. Any type of rose. To be judged 70% for fragrance, and 30% for overall appearance.

I have now sent my $400 check to ARS and hope that the new certificates will be available in time for the fall rose shows. So those of you with fall rose shows, make sure to order the Most Fragrant Rose certificate because it probably will not be listed on the current order form.

That's good news, the fragrance certificate will make a good addition to our Tenarky District Show in October. Do you know if the ARS has certificates for Mini-flora Queen, King, Princess. We were wanting to seperate the Mini-flora's and Miniatures. Howard

Howard,

From what I understand, the ARS Board did not approve Mini-Flora Queen, King, and Princess Certificates. Ben Williams offered to sponsor them, but ARS only approved a Best Mini-Flora Certificate. So Mr. Williams withdrew his sponsorship and the certificates never were produced. Personally, I believe that the floribundas deserve Q-K-P certificates before any are produced for the new mini-flora class. However, I would like to see a certificate for Best Mini-Flora Bloom. Some of the rose shows in Southern California are already separating the Mini-Floras from the Minis, and I plan to do so at the October Santa Clarita rose show, since I am writing the show schedule.

The issue of how to handle minifloras in shows is being discussed this summer by the judging committee. They will then recommend something to the Board. If you have an opinion on this issue (or any other such as Kitty's idea of Q,K,P for floribundas) let your district director and district judging chair know about it. They won't know how their district members stand on the issue unless you tell them.
