Exhibition blooms with torn foliage?

I was checking our garden after nasty thunderstorm--the cable TV and phone guys have been working overtime for days fixing all the damage--and noticed some torn leaves the roses I was hoping to exhibit at the end of the month.

Should all roses with damaged foliage be used for the English Box and bowl categories, or might an outstanding bloom with a torn leaf be worth exhibiting?

RE: Exhibition blooms with torn foliage?

Depends on the amount of damage and if the removal of the foliage distracts from the overall presentation of the stem. Bloom is always the primary factor. Torn leaves can be trimmed or removed.

BTW, if you want to exhibit, and haven't already done so, get yourself a copy of the Judges Manual (from the ARS, you don't have to be a judge or ARS member to get one) and Bob Martin's "Showing Good Roses" (from Roseshow.com).
