Show off your Purple Roses!

dublinbay z6 (KS)
12 years ago

Unfortunately, I have no purples, but I'd love to see yours. Of course, let's all agree that there probably is no true purple rose, but in recent years a number near purples (or sometimes purple) roses have been introduced, so I know some of you have them.

Any one have Night Owl climber? I remember drooling over a picture of it on the cover of some nursery catalog back when that rose was introduced. So how purple is it?

CELEBRATE YOUR PURPLE ROSES--POST THEM HERE!

Look forward to seeing them.

Kate

    Purple is probably the color I have the fewest of and most of them are minis. A lot of times I find they aren't the most vigorous growers for some reason. Maybe because I tend to get the modern roses. My two OGRs in mauve are very vigorous.

    Mini Always a Lady

    Angel Face

    Intrigue

    Lavender Jewel

    Memphis Blues

    Paradise

    Reine des Violettes

    Rose de Rescht
    {{gwi:344066}}

    Wild Plum

    Verdun is classed as "carmine red" but it's always mauve in my garden.

    Violet Mist

    Winter Magic

    That's all of my mauves. I'd like to see everyone else's since I think I could use a few more!

    Seil, Love Winter Magic...the fuzz on it makes it look like its frosty!

    Beth, Great Purples! I think my favorites are Lavendar Folies and Sweet San Carlos! I see Stormy Weather didn't make it in again...but as I said before, I must have that one now...and its been ordered for spring :)

    Oh, Heavens! Where do I start?

    Beth, you have tons of gorgeous purples! Blue Violet, Blueberry Nip, Rhapsody in Blue, and Shi-Un are all so yummy looking!

    Thanks, Tammy. I got Winter Magic first and really liked it but then I got Violet Mist and it's a much better, stronger and healthier rose. I've looked at Blue Girl several times and didn't get it. Mow I'm sorry I didn't. Juliet is a cutie!

    I'm loving all these purples/lavenders/near purples/near lavenders, etc. Had no idea there were so many

    I'm still wondering if someone has a Night Owl climber. Have wanted to know more about it since I saw it on the catalog front cover, but rarely does anyone even mention it.

    More pics--anyone? everyone? We are waiting. : )

    Wow--what a collection of purples! They are gorgeous!

    Do they always bloom that color of purple? Or just under certain conditions? Any of them fade or change shades with shifts in temperatures? Take Skyliner, for instance--is it magenta at times and purple at other times? I was really eyeing that one--must find out more about it.

    They almost look like fall-blooming asters--in pics anyway. Don't know about real life.

    I am drooling over all these beautiful purples!! I'm new to gardening so maybe you all can help me out a bit. I'm in Sacramento,CA and I have a south facing bed that I'd like to put a lavender-purple colored rose bush or rose tree. What I'm looking for is something that looks like Lavender Folies (pictured above).

    A. Where can I get it (Ive searched online and cant seem to find it) and...
    B. would it work in that location?

    Beth- maybe you can give me more details since you posted the pics?

    Many many thanks in advance!!

    I think it might be a cut flower--which means it is not really intended for general garden growing--which is probably why you can't find it listed as available at any nurseries.

    Isn't it Meilland rose? If so, I'd google up their site, locate their email address on the page, and email them a query about its availability. At least, it can't hurt to try.

    Good luck.

    This thread made me crave Angel Face all over again! Not a good idea, given that its died twice on me in our horrid winters :-/ What a pity, as it's a simply beautiful rose.

    Tons of beautiful blooms I've never seen before. I'll be heading over to RU in about a month. Have to pick up some of these different ones. Does anyone besides me grow Royal Amethyst???

  • the_bustopher z6 MO
    12 years ago

    I guess I'll throw in some of mine just for the fun of it. The first one is the HT Heirloom.

    {{gwi:311795}}

    The next one is a whole-bush shot of Blue for You showing is color variation as flowers age.

    Here is one of the FL Old Port.

    This one is the more magenta-colored FL News.

    Next is a passable bloom on the HT Barbara Streisand.

    This was one of many nice blooms on the GR Melody Parfumee, a rose that puts out lots and lots of flowers for me when healthy.

    The HT Chantilly Lace has been a delight for me. It usually does well even though the camera doesn't always catch the colors right.

    This FL, Carolina Girl, was only offered on a one-time basis.

    The HT Paradise is one I have liked since it first came out.

    This HT, Silver Spoon, is a rarely offered variety.

    Once in a while, the HT Charles de Gaulle can look rather impressive.

    The HT Silverado can also occasionally look rather nice, even with some raindrops on it.

    {{gwi:301247}}

    The one that takes the cake for being the most purple of purples, I suspect, is the OGR gallica Cardinal Richelieu aka Cardinal de Richelieu.

    {{gwi:234435}}

    And, finally, I also get a thrill from this great FL, Blueberry Hill.

    I hope you liked these.

    Cardinel looks unbelievable!! Tons of blooms - but I guess that's cause it's a once bloomer. What a stunner with that purple!!!

    I also really like Heirloom and Blueberry Hill.

    Your roses are all amazing - Thank you!!!
