cherrykist - I really like Austin roses, thanks for starting this interesting thread! You have quite a nice collection of them!

niecey - your photos of the Austin roses are awesome! I especially like the one of William Shakespeare 2000, Heritage (looks like the rose is mysteriously glowing from the inside), and Othello!

I'm eying William Shakespeare 2000 for quite a while now, but after seeing your photo, there is no way out: I have to order him!

Thanks for posting.

I don't think you should encourage me to post pics of my Austins...LOL...this thread could get awfully long! I grow dozens of them so I just pulled up the first pics I found and will have to forget about posting ALL of them.
Goodness knows there are so many that I hate to leave out!
But here's a sampling of a few that haven't been posted yet.

Niecey - Your 'Evelyn' looks really B e a u t i f u l . Makes me want to have one. Why is Princess Mararita your least favorite? Is that photo really PM? The blooms look single .
-------
Celestialrose - what are your thoughts on Mayor of Casterbridge? I haven't made up my mind whether I should buy it or give it a miss. It looks beautiful, but I don't understand why people at Helpmefindrose give this rose a poor rating.

Jimmy you are so right, It is not CPM, it is Comtes des Champagne(CDC).
The reason it is my least favorite cuz it grows very leggy and spacy and does not bloom very often. It's days are also numbered.
Celest that is quite a selection you have, they are gorgeous. I especially like Queen of Sweden and Pretty Jessica.
If I had more yard space, I would just add only Austins.

Cherry thanks for starting this thread, all of these vibrant and beautiful color Austin roses brightens up my cold(-14 outside) freezing gloomy day.

P.S. I also have Pat Austin, but for some reason I never could get an okay photo of her.

Gee, when I started this thread I didn't realize just how many Austins there are. I also didn't realize how many Austins I would want to have! Like Harlow Carr, and Othello, and Grace and Noble Antony......and the list goes on! Thanks for posting everyone, I hope to see a lot more!

RE: Post your Austins...pic heavy

Winchester's cathedral and Eglantine have the beauty that cannot be easily described with words, they have subdued, soft, relaxed beauty, originality combined with the classic look, these are really timeless genuine roses that attract not with vivid colors and perfect shape but with their warmth and gentleness.

Falstaff, William Shakespeare and Mayor of Casterbridge - so perfect that they do not look real, they are out of this world.

My favourite is Belle Story because I love nice stories and fairy tales. It is so tender and gentle and does not look like the other roses from the series.

Princess Margarita just looks demure, sad and crying...

 o
RE: Post your Austins...pic heavy

Prospero is the truly most beautiful rose existing on this Earth, at least for me because my first impression is that it combines poetry and physical beauty, music and and fire, passion and elegance, light and shadow, power and weakness. It is an explosion of colors and a wirlpool of emotions as if the good and the bad are fighting in it, it is the ideal rose: angel and demon, happiness and sadness, sunshine and darkness, no other rose has affected me in such a way as this. This is a rose full of contradictions and these contradcitions are the essence of its appeal! The colors appear and disappear and turn magically into others by waves. Exotic rose, magical and gorgeous! Stunning pictures! You are a magical photographer.

 o
RE: Post your Austins...pic heavy

I KNEW better than opening this post! WOW! SOOO many pretty one's! I have several Austins and I absolutely LOVE them! Would love to have a few hundred more if I thought I could keep up with them! Thanks for the great pictures.

 o
Prospero

I am still mystified by Prospero, it is like a rose from a secret garden, from heaven or hell, it has some unexplicable power over me, I cannot stop watching it - I really got goosebumps when I saw it, and I cannot take my eyes off of it, i think it is a powerful work of art able to provoke thought and emotion. All the pictures are gorgeous but Prospero is like a magnet for my eyes and heart. I have never been moved by a rose like this before. Extraordinary.

My favourites in te last installment: Peach blossom and the Herbalist, they have delicate charm and affectionate sweetness. Very lovely.

All the pictures are very beautiful.

Windrush

Windrush is very beautiful too, such a purity, frailty and delicacy, I can imagine the blossoms dancing with the breeze, and the sweet fragrance lingering in the air, and its touch so soft to the skin...

Gosh, there are so many pretty Austins...

Thanks everybody for posting your pics!

Celeste - could say something more about Queen of Sweden and Spirit of Freedom. How are these roses doing for you? How is the fragrance?

twohuskies - I love your deep dark colored Austins like Chianti, The Prince, Tradescant, Prospero. The colors are just to die for. Would you please share some more information about the purple repeated bloomers?

the bustopher - it is great that you have posted some of the more uncommon Austins. I especially like the Clair Rose!

Oh my goodness! I need info now!!! What can anyone tell me about Golden Celebration, Tradescant, Prospero, Lady Emma Hamilton, Molineux and Charles Austin?

I forgot I had Lilian Austin, she was new own root last season so I haven't seen her blooms yet.

Tammy

 o
RE: Post your Austins...pic heavy

Ah yes, the crimson/purples are by far my favorite color rose.

The Prince has the most gorgeous deep wine red/purple flowers with a strong fragrance. Each one is perfection to me. He isn't a strong grower in my garden, only blooms moderately, and gets a fair amount of blackspot but well worth the garden space. He stays small and compact in my garden.

I'm often mesmorized by the beauty of Tradescant's blooms. They start off a dark red and as they age the outer petals take on a shocking deep purple tone. Fragrance is strong. This is a small low growing rose in my garden. It seems Tradescant would rather grow wide than tall. I would give anything for mine to be a large plant. I'm sure in a warmer zone where it wouldn't die back to the ground every year it could get quite large. This rose needs to be sprayed.

I've had Prospero for 2 summers so he is still pretty new to me. The flowers are usually much more red though they will often fade to that gorgeous color shown in my previous post. So far he has stayed small and compact. I don't recall much about his fragrance or disease resistance. Here are 2 more photos of Prospero to better show his color range.

Prospero

Prospero

And while I'm at it I'll throw in one more - Graham Thomas. He hasn't done much in my garden and I've almost gotten rid of him on many occassions, but he takes up hardly any space and every once and a while I'm rewarded with a few blooms. I'm sure in a warmer zone he would be magnificent.
Graham Thomas

twohuskies - thank you very much for posting 2 more photos of Prospero. They show the development in the color quite well.

Also thank you very much for making the effort and giving so detailed information about The Prince, Tradescant and Prospero. That was quite helpful!

Based on what you are writing I will get The Prince!!! He seems to have the color that I like the most out of the three roses and strong fragrance is always a plus. It will be interesting how this rose is doing for me here in zone 10. Thanks again for enabling me!

RE: Post your Austins...pic heavy

Cherrykist, let me tell you about the differences between Golden Celebration, Graham Thomas and Molineux. I grow GC and GT and have seen Molineux in person. They are all winners!!! If one had to be chosen of the three, I would say it would have to be Golden Celebration. Arguably, David Austin's best rose.

Golden Celebration: Big cups of gold with a citrus scent that is strong. The color is like no other yellow. It really has gold in it. It is a very easy rose to grow and insists on being noticed in the garden. Is it my favorite rose? Yes, Yes, yes!!!

Graham Thomas: Beautiful yellow blooms. Such delicate soft, yet vibrant yellow flowers. It looks like porcelain. It has a nice tea-rose scent and it is a very good rose, but the bush grows tall and lanky.

Molineux: I don't grow this one, but I have seen it in another garden. It is smaller than GC and GT. It has nice blooms with a good scent that are more orange-yellow at times. It is good, but GC and GT are must haves.

Someone asked about Abraham Darby living up to all the hype.

It was my 2nd Austin. The heavenly fragrance wafts into my nearby bedroom window and that I appreciate!!!

Tho I think it is a matter of personal preference. If you love apricot roses that are not needed for bouquets, and you have plenty of space, you will enjoy Abe. Blossoms are large and consistantly attractive. For me only, it gets an 8 out of 10. Evelyn gets my 10.

 o
RE: Post your Austins...pic heavy

I have not posted here before (I hang out at the hosta forum) but I really enjoyed all the pictures of the beautiful roses. I don't live in the best climate for roses - cold winter and very hot summer. The roses I planted when I moved here 20 years ago are for the most part gone. Hybrid T's and fancy climbers don't do well or don't survive at all. Gradually I planted Canadian Explorer Roses which are great and some varities of old fashioned rugosa or shrub roses. I planted some David Austin's too and some of these are doing fine in spite of the fact that I must choose between barely adequate morning sun or baking hot afternoon/evening sun. I have a few more varieties than I'm posting here, but these are the best or at least the ones I have pictures of.

The first wasn't mentioned I don't think. I like it. It's quite different, loose and a good grower. You will see in the third picture a few dark blooms with it. That is the root stock which I've let go. It seems to bloom just after The Countryman finishes its first bloom. The wall in the third picture was done this year causing the bush to be tied up. It now looks like a fountain and I think I'm going to leave it that way.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Golden Celebration and Graham Thomas were planted together inside what was a picket fence. The John Davis climber grew well but the other two were sort of sparce in their flowers. I'm hoping that bringing down the height of the wall by half and opening it up will help them do better next year.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The next two roses are on the west, very hot, side of the house. Sometimes it seems like they just open and get fried the next day. Only Abraham really does well here. I like the color of Molinux but it is very stingy in it's blooms.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

This is my favourite David Austin rose - in fact it's probably my favourite rose of all. The smell is so sweet, like fruit and the blooms are georgeous, soft, yellow. It has a great companion in the Frances Williams hosta.

RE: Post your Austins...pic heavy

Thank you for your comments!

Randy, I do have a passion for my garden but I've had to adjust a lot. The one thing I do is not follow the rules. Hostas have become a passion because so many of the plants (Roses included) were difficult to grow here. I've almost given up on T-Roses and in a learning curve have come to love the loose, natural look of the old fashioned varieties even more. My garden started out along the lines of English Cottage, loose and natural. Over the years because of increasing shade and increasing age, I've realized that the foliage plants suit me better. I'm so thankful to be able to enjoy the hostas who's beauty is there all season, not just when they have a flower. I am very active on the Hosta Forum if anyone wants to see more of my garden or click on McTavish above to see some other pictures on my home page.

Organicgardendreams - I'm going to post a couple threads with some of my other roses. I'm glad you like my pictures since I like sharing them. I see on your home page you are in San Diego - I grew up in Garden Grove.

What a wonderful post. Love the photos of so many different Austins. I only have 3 so far (all new last year) but seeing so many northerners in z5 and below have success with them I think I'll be trying more. I do not mulch or collar unless I have an unusual amount of free time in the fall so a rose has to be very hardy to stay in my garden.

I also have 'Constance Spry' but she sulked last year and did not put on growth or bloom well. It looks like she wintered OK so we'll see if she has got her footing this year.

+ starts flowering after main flush of other roses, very good autumn repeating, blooms have a good quality in autumn, should stay quite small

Ushak: Are you describing Charlotte as one that should stay quite small? Maybe in Zone 6 but in my Mom's garden in Zone 7 this rose is anything but petite.

Rose Charlotte

I took this picture two summers ago and the rose was only one year planted then from a bare root. That tall cane in the middle came up to my chin and I am six feet tall.

After flushes Mom goes in and cuts it back quite a bit so ends up doing so throughout the course of the summer. A good rose that definitely likes to stretch and let its presence be known.

Nancy, since you said you're interested in 'Pretty Jessica' here's another pic of her. You won't have to worry about this rose getting leggy ... she's very compact.

I agree with gnabonnand, but I'll use another superlative "ZOUNDS!" :)

I've got one ready to pop forth with flowers, but it's just a first year rose. (and probably will NEVER get that large anyway) :) Serious rose envy here!

I have sentimental reasons for loving Abe Darby but have grown very fond of both DA's I have companioned with him. This is L.D. Braithwaite....

Those are just too good looking. Now I am going to have to coax mine to bloom some more.

Positively breathtaking... every picture!

I have a question for you all... which of the Austins are the hardiest? I'm in zone 5b, but we occasionally get some really frigid winters. I've played it safe choosing roses rated for zone 4, and they are lovely... but the English roses are just too beautiful! Which do you think stand the greatest chance of survival in the colder zones?

Thanks in advance!

I also love Gertrude Jekyl, I have her between a WS2000 and The Prince and she is such a lovely contrast to them both. Please forgive the foliage, too many projects, too little time.

Closeups of a L D Braithwaite bloom.
This rose has good cold resistance, fair blackspot resistance.

Mary Rose-
A sturdy plant in my border. My original was shaded by a growing oak, but I reproduced it several times from cuttings. These are the result:
