How do you tell rose species apart?

I am an longtime vegetable and herb gardener but I am new to roses. How do you tell rose species apart? I have pics of some of my neighbor's roses. I was offered cuttings or the entire plants. Some of the leaves have black splotches. Will I spread this disease to my husband's established roses?
Thank You,
Karen

Karen - You will get more luck getting answers to your questions if you ask them on the "Antique Roses" forum, or the "Roses" forum here on Garden Web - there are lots of folks on those who love to try and ID roses - new, or old. This Gallery is mostly where folks post pretty pictures -
