Charles Darwin

Probably will be my new favorite yellow Austin based off of what I've seen so far. Color is a bronzed yellow with the faintest of pink undertones, then quickly fades to a bronzed white. The scent is absolutely fantastic and I like it more than Graham Thomas and Golden Celebration. So far, I like the bloom form and the blooms are held upright on sturdy stems. It should be interesting to see how it matures.

Nice rose Nick! It has a very enjoyable butterscotch hue to it.

Wow!! I love that form of bloom - has so much interest to it. And it has tons of big fat blooms. Love the color too!!

    Looks like a keeper!

    Thanks,

Thanks everybody. I had another bloom open up today. Interesting how the color fades.....many hate it......I like it.

Hoov, I know a blue pot would contrast the yellow tones well, but as an Ohio State fan......blue and yellow is just a combination I can't bring myself to enjoy haha.

jeffcat, if you're interested I have my Charles Darwin posted on the Antique Rose gallery. The color struck me as being somewhat different from yours but I think they're both gorgeous. As you said, not everyone likes the color of this rose but I also really like it. Your rose is much larger and sturdier than mine, which is own-root.

That's a great looking rose. Hope we'll see more pictures of it as it grows. Color of pot looks just right for the rose.

A lot more of the blooms opened up today to reveal the many different personalities of Charles Darwin.

Note the "bronzed" yellow that I'm speaking of:

New bloom that is a bit out of form

This was the original bloom that I pictured originally above...not how it fades to a "bronzed" white...kind of beige in color, yet still has spots of watered down yellow lemonade coloring. On most roses, a color like this indicates a spent bloom...not the case with Charles Darwin. The bloom is perfectly healthy and doesn't have any browning or water spots...the color simply faded. Those with Evelyn will know what I mean with how Evelyn's blooms have the color fade out to a more white bloom.

Quite the intriguing rose...On the left...the 1st bloom faded to a pale yellow/white after 1 day....on the right....a brand new bloom with bronzed yellow center having a pink colored cup form.

Nick, I happen to love the color it fades to, but I do know many people have discarded this one because of it's color fading. I don't have it, but I see in the most recent DA catalog that the asterisk that is given to the best roses, has been taken away from Charles Darwin. So DA does not consider it one of his top flight roses anymore. Like I said though, from your pics, it looks like a beauty to me. I know it is supposed to have a strong fragrance. What kind of fragrance do you detect? Fruity?

Yes Juliet, I just had more of the blooms open today and could detect the fragrance better. It's an interesting scent. It has a hint of lemons in it, but is generally very strongly scented fruit/grapefruit fragrance. The scent is a warm fragrance too, much like WS2000's fragrance is "warm". I personally already think it's one of my best yellows. You have to be spot on with the fragrance though as it's definitely hit or miss....at least so far....as CD matures, that could certainly change. This is only the 1st flush on a 1 gal potted Star Rose I picked up.

I know others don't like color fading of blooms. I like it. It presents the ideology of 2 roses in 1 bush, provides variety, and in a sense, provides a natural bouquet of different color intensities and colors of blooms. Tivoli's rose explains
