Carol--Big Duke is named for John Wayne and is a Von Weddle rose. I wrote Von Weddle in the 1990's and asked him the same Question you asked. And he wrote me back that he had talked to John Wayne's family about naming the rose "John Wayne" but the family would not give permission so he came up with "Big Duke".(I still have that letter today)--Ron

Oh how cool is that!! I'm surprised he didn't choose a big bold red rose for him. But then, John Wayne's name is really Marion. :)

My personal favorites are 'Evelyn' and 'Pink Chrystal'. I am familiar with 'Evelyn' and always liked this rose, but 'Pink Crystal' is new to me. It is always so exciting to see an unknown rose!
