Jude the Obscure

I told my wife this rose was leaving this spring so I could enlarge the vegetable garden. It's never done much here in 5 years. I didn't get around to it, and naturally this was the response:
Jude the Obscure
I've read this has amazing fragrance. I can't smell a thing. Must be one of those nose oddities.

Haha, you have to love how those things work out. You scared it into bloom. Sometimes the fragrances are oddly on and off. I really can't explain it. For example, right now my WS2000 and Red Eden are very fragrant, but if I go out there another hour from now and smell the same blooms, then there won't be barely any scent whatsoever. Quite odd...but in any case, the blooms look amazing. I would have picked up Jude if she would have been available at my nursery. I love the cupped blooms.

What a wonderful surprise. I'd have no trouble doing with 1 or 2 fewer tomato plants if I could have such a lovely Jude! LOL

That is a nice Jude. I am not surprised that it finally did something its fifth year. I have seen some of the same things with my Austins. They just seem to require as much time to really get going as do peonies, at least 4 years. Maybe it will repeat bloom a little better this year. Could you let us know if Jude repeats better as it ages? I'm sure someone who grows it would like to know if it will improve.

As to fragrance, that can be iffy. However, I noticed that on my LD Braithwaite, this year is the first year that I have noticed a good fragrance to it, and the first year that it really looked like something that wanted to be noticed. I was not expecting to see the flower quality that I saw. This is its fifth year in the garden that I know of. Now I wish I had room for more of this red rose.

Your Jude is gorgeous! I think I'll threaten to move mine and see if he responds like yours. Most of my Austins take off in the second year but not this guy. Third year and he's still stingy with the blooms. I know the mantra, patience, but . . .

Jude is a finicky sort ... Mine is still spindly and stingy with blooms, even after four years. Still, the intoxicating fragrance is worth all the effort. Glad you are keeping yours! ~Susan
