| Here is a brief, side-by-side look at the collection of Austin oranges that I have. Some of these flowers are quite small due to the heat or other factors, but some are normal. So far, of these, only the Pat Austin rose really fries badly in the heat. The others just shrink up and fade. The first one, for comparison, is Carding Mill.

I just love Austin roses and my favorite color just happens to be orange, so I got a double treat out of your post. I know what you mean about this high heat my Austins keep tring but no where near the blooms that I had in cooler wheather. I haven't seen Lady of Shalott before but I really like it, Thanks for taking time to share with us. Hope to see more soon. Harold

Very lovely orange roses, bustopher! My favorite is Pat Austin, but it won't work well for me in the heat of summer here, when you say it fries the most out of the oranges that you have shown today. Thanks for sharing your pictures and your experiences! Christina

As for fragrance, I think all of them have a nice smell. I'm just not too confident about Pat Austin since I don't get lots of flowers on her very frequently. The only other orange one I have that is not shown is Port Sunlight. It is not doing all that well in its location. It has a nice color and fragrance when it blooms, but it doesn't bloom much, and the flowers are quite small.

Austin does a nice orange. My favorite of the group is the unattainable Summer Song. I've grown Pat Austin and she is not one for my climate as you said, but even in the milder California coastal area I understand her blooms don't last more then a day or two.....Is Summer Song a large grower? I grow some of my roses in containers, but many, many of the Austins just get too big for a normal sized pot 20-24")....Maryl

Summer Song appears to be topping out around 5-6 ft. It can get longer canes if it is looking for sunlight. One I have is in the shade of another bush, and it wants to have longer canes. The other two are in sun, and they are getting about 5 to 5-1/2 ft tall.

All beautiful, but I really love that LADY OF SHALOTT. Almost ordered it, but I just have no more room. Too bad, cuz she's lovely. Thanks for sharing!

Carding Mill sure is a beauty, and a nice color to boot! I had no idea it was that intense. Does the color fade a bit as the rose opens? Renee

Carding Mill does fade some along with everybody else in the heat. In mid-summer it is more of a pink than an apricot.
|
Orange is not my favorite color for a rose, but these are all lovely. Know what you mean about roses frying or shrinking up and fading in the intense heat we have been having. I think a number of my roses aren't even trying to bloom in this heat. But Molineux just broke out into buds and blooms all over the bush. Guess it is a true sun-lover! Kate

Hello the_bustopher, What are your thoughts on Summer Song? Do you like this rose? Does it bloom much for you or is it a poor repeater? I got rid of mine 2 years ago, but now I'm thinking of giving it another try. I find it really hard to mix the orange roses with my other roses without making the garden look too modern as if I was growing hybrid teas.

They're all beauties, bustopher! I've been trying to get Summer Song for 3 years and they're always sold out!

Jumbojimmy, I do like Summer Song. It is better its second year. It has been repeat blooming, but with the heat the way it has been, the flowers are quite small and bleached. I have had problems with bud worms eating lots of rose buds in the garden also this year. Given the way the rest of the garden looks at the moment, I am not worried about the Summer Songs. I also actually had a single, 5-petalled Comte de Chambord this week. I have also seen 5-petalled Olympiads in the past also all because of the heat. They do strange things. In view of the bright colors of some of the R. foetida varieties, I wouldn't worry too much about mixing up the colors in the garden. Summer Song will not be mistaken for a formal, show-quality, hybrid tea. Some of the older hybrid teas in the color range like some of the Pernetianas, also do not look like modern hybrid teas either.
