Sweet Summer Oranges

The daylilies are getting cut back and the roses are starring again. Despite the 90 plus temps, there are still some nice blooms out there. They don't last as long and are much fewer than when we have temps under 90, of course. Here are some varied shades of orange that I am enjoying daily.

Heaven On Earth is not really an orange rose, yet it opens like this for me. It then becomes pink, then almost white.

Climbing America looks like this in heat. It is more coral in spring.

Even Buff Beauty is looking orange.

Honey Dijon, peanut butter or orange?

Just Joey blooms all the time.

Life Lines, a climbing mini

Jean Giono

Outrageous

Vavoom

Alpine Sunset

Moss rose (portulaca)
Thanks for looking!

Thank you Kathy, you just made my day.
Love all your orange shades.
Love the portulaca as well, did a double take though, after the lovely rose blooms.

They're all beautiful, Kathy! I so miss my JJ! Must replace her soon. Love that Vavoom but I've heard some negative things about it. How is yours?

Seil, the jury is still out on Vavoom. The blooms last a couple of days in the heat. The bush is vigorous growing--narrowish and tall, which I like. The leaves sometimes get burnt edges--none of my others do this. But--it is the first year in the ground so I will give it more time. I am not even thinking of shovel pruning yet.

Strangely, the yellow portulaca came on the wind and has gotten bigger and more widespread each year. Last year I bought some orange and I got two big plants of orange this year. They are very cheerful flowers I have always loved. One more photo (with 3 different roses-Disneyland, Amber Kordana, and Autumn Splendor):

Thanks to all for the nice comments!

Nice oranges, Kathy. My favorite is the Moss rose (portulaca) because of its special uniqueness! :)

Oh how pretty! I have some moss rose in my rose garden in one corner too and I like them there too. They reseed themselves and come back every year.

Carol, Jean Giono blooms almost all the time--not full flushes, but there are always blooms. DH says it has a light apple scent. It is prettiest when opening or when just opened.

I like roses that always have a bloom or two. Queen of Sweden is like that for me - always has at least 3 blooms all summer (often more).

Katy,

What do you do to the daylilies this time of year? I live in Livermore, and don't know how to take care of them. Any info would be helpful.

Kathy, your orange roses are gorgeous. I like the "peanut butter" Honey Dijon rose best, but the deep orange moss rose is very interesting. I have never seen an orange moss rose.

Thanks for sharing!

Becky, I have cut all my daylilies back as it seems to cut down on disease and gives my nearby roses more room and sunlight (I have a small, California yard). The daylilies start growing back immediately and in a couple of weeks, you have all this pristine green foliage. I also cut them back in late winter or very early spring. This works well for me--I do not know if it is a good or common practice.
