Special bloom of America

It's not quite as bad as the wait during the winter months right now, but I have a long lull between flushes, with just a few blooms. This morning the way the sunlight hit this bloom of America made it look especially lovely.

Lovely--the light and shade brings out all the charms of this rose!

After the spring bloom, most of my roses go through a "rest" stage that sometimes seems like it will never end! What I did to give myself some comfort is search for a couple roses that are very floriferous and fast on the rebloom and plant them close to where my eyes first fall when I look outside to see how the gardens are doing each morning. That way, I first see lots of blooms and only secondarily notice that a number of other roses are sitting around doing nothing (the lazy bums!).

Works for me anyway. Oh, the two floriferous ones I picked were two floribundas: Easter Basket and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Thank you Kate. That's a great idea. I did plant two OLOG this spring and they are doing good. I believe once they get established they will be blooming machines. They've already bloomed quite a bit. Probably a little over half of my roses look like they are going to have a pretty good third flush, but some of them are taking a long rest.

That's gorgeous, Sara!

I have noticed that a lot of my roses are taking a little longer to recycle bloom this year. They were later in their spring flushes because of the hard winter and cold spring and now they seem to be resting up after that big push. If nothing else gardening teaches us patience!

I was thinking the same thing about some of my roses that are slower recycling. The temps seem cooler this year and cloudy/rainy days, may have contributed to extending the bloom cycle? Yes, it's nice to have some that bloom more frequently. Artistry, Scentimental, PJPII, and Veteran's Honor seem to recycle faster in my garden.

Thank you Seil. It does seem like mine have been slower this year too. And yes you are so right about gardening and patience!

Kentucky_rose - Glad to know that about VH and PJPII. Maybe once mine become more established they'll bloom more often. Does anyone have a picture of Veterans Honor in full bloom? Mine doesn't seem to have more than five or six blooms at a time. I would like to see one loaded with blooms.

Sara-Ann, my Veteran's Honor sounds about like yours, 5-6 buds at a time, then shortly, 5-6 more. Usually, I cut them ASAP for arrangements and seldom leave them on the bush. Repeat for me is good, but not an abundance of blooms is probably a better description of its performance.

Thanks Kentucky_rose. Maybe it's not a heavy bloomer, guess I'll just have to enjoy the blooms I do get. Sounds like yours repeats more quickly than mine.

Gosh that's a gorgeous rose!! Stunning!
How big is the bloom? I thought they were about 3" on America. LOL Obviously I'm wrong.
I love the detail on the petals that the camera captured.

Thanks Carol - I think the blooms are around 3 or 4 inches. I usually take close-ups to enhance the details, so that probably makes it appear larger.
