Roses from the Magee Rose Garden

| Yesterday I visited the Magee Rose Garden in Carlbad, CA. I was surprised how many roses where still prolifically blooming there and on some of the roses the flowers were huge.
Souvenir de la Malmaison
Lady Hillingdon
Bride's Dream, as you can see when you compare the size of the flower with the hand, this bloom was humongous. Unfortunately, I could only detect a very light almost faint fragrance.
Bride's Dream, side view
Mme. Alfred Carriere
Secret
Frederic Mistral, very fragrant rose. The bush was large, very well folliated and had a nice shape for an HT. I grow this rose myself and would highly recommend it, when there is a chance that it would do well for you in your climate. The pink flowers are very pretty in my opinion and the fragrance is heavenly!
Thanks for looking!
Christina

| Sounds heavenly to have a rose garden nearby. Especially like your shot of Frederic Mistral showing his shades of pinkness. |

| I live in Carlsbad and I've NEVER been there. I need to put a visit at the top of my list. I've been to the rose garden at the flower fields and that was cool. |

| Thanks everyone for you kind comments! iris gal, the rose garden is not exactly close by, in fact it is 25 - 45 minutes away depending on the traffic, but well worth the ride! I am glad that you like Frederic Mistral it is my favorite rose in my own garden in the moment. pelicanhead, I was very lucky, the person, who established this garden showed it to me together with another rose enthusiast! For you and all others that are interested, the address of the garden is: Magee Historical House and Garden Magee Park 258 Beech Street Carlsbad, CA The Garden is established and maintained by the members of the California Coastal Rose Society, if you want to find out more about it go to there website and click under "gardens". pelicanhead, you have to go there, I am sure you will enjoy it! Marina, I am glad you like my way to take photos. You picked exactly my favorite roses from this threat. Looks like we have the same pink taste ;-)! Harol, it is really a pleasure for me to share these rose photos on the Rose Gallery. Masha, Souvenir de la Malmaison is hard to beat for its beauty, isn't it? Can't wait until my baby band is giving me the first flower! Christina |

| Christina, these are such lovely photos. I have to say my favorite is SdlM since I also just acquired this rose and your photo makes me very glad I did. Krista, I know our climate is different from yours but Madame Alfred Carriere is absolutely humongous at Magee Garden. I'd say it's well over 15 feet tall, probably about 10 feet wide and at the very least 20 feet long. Hopefully for you it will stay much smaller because I know you'll really enjoy the lovely fragrance. Ingrid |

Krista, yes the roses at the Magee Garden were very pretty. I believe, that the flowers looked so good and were so large has to do with the age of the rose bushes. My understanding is that most of them are a couple of years old. Great that you want to add Mme. Alfred Carriere to your garden. It is a wonderful rose. After seeing her in the Magee Garden I had to give up on that idea, because as Ingrid stated, this rose can get incredible large here in CA and my garden is unfortunately to small to accommodate her. Ingrid, I glad that you like my pictures. I hope your freshly bought SdlM is producing these incredible beautiful flowers, that this rose is known for, for you soon. Christina |

| Ingrid and Christina, thanks for the info on Mme A. Carriere height. I will have to think about this rose... I'm looking for a rose to be about 6-7 feet in the spot I have in mind... I would need MAC to be about half its warm zone size, will think on it... |

| Pelicanhead -- You really should join up with CCRS -- I think it's the best rose society around, and it is my "home" society even though I live in Orange County (San Juan Capistrano). I'll introduce you around if you come and ask for Kathy. I drive the 45 minutes to get to meetings on the third Tuesday of every month, and it is surely worth it. You should come to the next one -- mark your calendar for Oct 20. It's right there in the little building called Heritage Hall next to the Magee Garden. At 6:15 p.m we have a "rosaholics" meeting where we discuss the problems we are having or other timely issues -- the next one (Oct 20) is prepping for the winter ssason (which - yes -- we do, even in California). That's the early topic. Then at the "main meeting" which goes from 7 pm to 8:30 we have a speaker. At the October 20 meeting that will be Clair Martin, Curator of Rose and Perennial Gardens at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens. The illustrated talk is entitled "A Summer of English Rose Gardens" and, as mentioned, it will be given in Heritage Hall, 2650 Garfield Street, at 7:00 pm on Tuesday October 20th. Mr. Martin has written four books: English Roses for Southern California, The Book of Outdoor Gardening, 100 English Roses for the American Garden and 100 Old Roses for the American Garden. Come one, come all. Then in November, (Tuesday Nov. 17th at 5 pm -- special time this meeting only), we have our main fund raiser for the year which attracts a huge crowd. It's our annual rare rose auction where we sell roses that are not in commerce (at all, anywhere) for which CCRS has become justifiably famous. You need to come to that also. Also, CCRS can always use help with the Magee Rose Garden maintenance tasks. We maintain that garden in exchange for free rent on our meeting place. That maintenance happens on occasional Saturday mornings, for about an hour each time. The next one is Nov. 7 at 9:00 am -- just show up with a pair of clippers in tow. The guy who runs the show (Bob) always brings home-baked goodies for the crew as an incentive to get folks to show up. Anyway, come on by -- better late than never! Kathy |

Thanks so much, Kathy, for the offer. Actually, I am a member of CCRS. I have only been to one meeting, unfortunately. I will try and make it to the next one on the 20th for sure. Carlyn |

| Krista, I hope you find a way to grow Mme. Alfred Carriere. She is such an incredible pretty rose. Maybe she somehow can be kept in bounds in your climate? wesley butterflies, thanks for your compliment regarding my photos, I am happy that you like them. Kathy, thanks for adding all the information about the CCRS to my post. I am planning to come to the next meeting on Tuesday, the 20th and would love to meet you there in person. pelicanhead, if you join the next meeting of the CCRS I would like to personally get to know you there, too. aimeekitty, Secret looked especially pretty on that day. I guess the cooler weather that we were having the days before I took the photo had a positive effect on the coloration of that rose and on many others, too. Christina |
