| Evelyn and Marchesa Boccella grow near to each other in a fragrant section of the garden. It's one of my favorite spots in the garden to enjoy the fragrant roses.
Evelyn
Marchesa Boccella
Marchesa Boccella has grown taller now, this pic is a few years old.

Very nices roses indeed. Evelyn is also one of my favourites. I didn't know MB. It seems very close to Jacques Cartier. |

| Krista, thanks for these pictures of two exquisite roses. Evelyn is particularly sumptuous. I've always wanted to grow it but somehow have the feeling from what I've read that she's not the easiest rose, and that she's also quite tall. The blooms are to die for though. Isabelle, you're quite right, Jacques Cartier and Marchesa Boccella are the same rose. Fairly recently it was determined here that Marchesa Boccella is the correct name, but who can say? Ingrid |

Krista, what Beautiful roses you have and I'll bet like you said the fragrance is to die for. I especially like MARCHESA BOCCELLA and such a healthy looking plant also. Please let us see more. Harold |

| What a gorgeous, gorgeous beauty your Marchesa Boccella is! I love her! She is a repeat bloomer? right? I'd compliment your beautiful Evelyn too, but right now there's a debate going about the Austins taking over the Old World Roses on our rose forum. Which, LOL! I stirred up! But seeing Marchesa makes me sigh and dream about the romantic, hard-to-find roses. I need a tall rose too. Can you tell me about how it grows? as Ingrid brought up. It's a shrub rose, right? Tall would be fantastic. |

| Very beautiful pictures, Krista. I am trying very hard to resist buying Evelyn as I have no room anymore, but you are making it very difficult for me! Masha |

| Thank you, everyone. Jim, thank you. Evelyn is one of my favorite Austins. Isabelle, yes, Marchesa Boccella does seem to resemble Jacques Cartier, and many rosarians feel that they are the same rose.... Ingrid, I think Evelyn would grow tall in your zone... it does seem to tolerate a range of climates. Here it grows to about 4 feet tall. Harold, yes, the fragrance is superb, wonderfully sweet. Serena, yes, Marchesa is a repeat bloomer, and does very well in a cold zone. It grows to 3- 3 1/2 feet tall. Maybe it's close to four feet tall this autumn. It is a shrub type rose, and forms a rounded, twiggy, shrub. Masha, thank you. I can understand why one would want to add Evelyn to the garden! |

| Evelyn is lovely as always. Expecially like seeing her button centers. She is holding #1 place in my affections for the 3 years I've had her. My climate zone is very similar to San Jose. |

| ooo, must have Boccella! must have...! Harold Krista is also an organics rose grower, so if it's that gorgeous with no-spray, Wowee! you can imagine what a great rose to have. |

| My understanding is that the rose sold as "Jacques Cartier" here is Marchesa Boccella. We discussed here many years ago that the real "Jacques" is actually much taller, with almost a climbing habit. My plant, bought as Marchesa Boccella usually doesn't get more than 5' tall, but there is one cane now that is almost 6'. Lovely plant, Krista, it is one of my favorites too! |

| Evelyn is beautiful. Mine open its flower today and it looks wonderful! For those who haven't tried growing Evelyn - you need to have one. Don't procrastinate. I've been procrastinating for a long time. Mine is doing well in my garden. I love the name. It has beautiful, thick petals that are nicely arranged and what a lovely scent - to me the scent is quite similar to Jude the Obscure, but a little lighter. Marchesa Boccella - love that colour/form. I'm planning to get one next year. Thanks for showing us those wonderful photos. |

| Christina, thank you. I prune Marchesa in the spring time to shape it, I like to try to keep it from growing too wide. Serena, I think you'll be pleased with Marchesa! |

| Krista, you are soooo amazing, so patient, and what a wonderful glory of roses you bring to me too. I would have posted every single one that you sent me. LOL! that Lavender Lassie the Odier Purple Pavement countless others, so inspiring. And this thread too really brings that magic with the rare Marcesa Boccella. Krista, late tonight I started my first initial huntdown with Hartwood Roses for their next year's inventory for Marcela. Hopefully they will have it for 2010. Only if they don't have it will I seek other vendors. Small private nurseries deserve so much support for their efforts. I wrote Jim1961 this: Jim my new addiction is trying to find and support the ancient roses and gathering up bee-loving plants like heather, fireweed, and bee balm. Krista has been an angel in trying to help me! I am so appreciative! So again, many many thanks Krista for all the wonderful advice and gorgeous email photos! This forum would be blessed to have them all here! |
