Mister Lincoln in my Connecticut garden taken on June 9, 2009. We love California but I hated to leave my Connecticut garden.

This is the product of near perfect soil plus the fact that most of these roses had been in the ground for at least 15 years. Unfortunately in CT we only got to see this for a few short weeks and in many years heavy rain wiped it out. Nothing can ever be this beautiful in SoCal but what you do get requires far less work and it lasts almost the whole year.

That is why I love Mr. Lincoln! Plain gorgeous.

I thought gardening here was harder work. Horrible soil, no rain, year-round weeds, constant dead-heading, etc. I do love some of the semi-tropicals but miss peonies & lilacs. Heart wrenching to leave a garden you love.

True it can be frustrating here because it is so hot and dry and the soil is terrible. I've only been here a little over a year and everything still looks stressed and mostly unattractive to me. However, for roses we don't have black spot which is the biggie or Japanese and Oriental beetles or midge (so far) which could also be horrible or canker or crown gall or deer or voles or last but not least - heavy rain that wiped out the first flush almost every year. What you have to do here is work hard to build up the soil and water a lot and try to avoid roses that are especially prone to powdery mildew.

Henry - It's obvious that wherever you live you know how to grow beautiful roses. It must have been difficult to leave behind your collection in Connecticut. In the picture above I love Mister Lincoln and all the other vivid rose colors, so lovely.

I'm not sure what this is but it could be Mister Lincoln although it seems a bit orange. I have a lot of individual shots but I didn't write down what they were.

Got it. Those Japanese beetles are a scourge.

The foliage looks glorious on the rose above. Could it be America?
