Too much water?

I'm a newbie, and I've got my mini's in large pots (10"). I can see little red nubs where I'm guessing there are new shoots?

In any case, when I water, the water sits on top of the soil in the pots for a few minutes as it drains down through. It does eventually all settle on through, though. They're not on trays or anything to keep the water in, but I worry I'm overwatering. Is there a way I can easily check when I should and should not be watering? It's still in the first week of potting them up, and I was told they should have a good watering every day for the first 3 weeks or so.

I've got a mixture of soil, peat, and pearlite in the pots, with gravel at the bottom and it seemed 'loose' enough to me.

Also - the weather outlook is beginning to look up here, so yay! We're supposed to have high's in the 60's next week! (Oh, and I just found a ladybug around my house! I set it free.)
