Just transplanted mini's -

I've been reading this forum for several weeks and decided to take the plunge and purhase some mini-roses. I purchased two and planted each into its own planter, approx 18" square and deep. I have placed the newly transplanted roses against the house in a spot that gets morning sun but is shady for most of the day to help them adjust to their new surrounding. I live in New Mexico and plan to move the roses to a spot in the yard that gets full sun. How long should I leave the roses in their current location before moving to the spot that has sun all day? One wilted a little and the other one looks just as perky as when I transplanted it. Daytime temps in the 60's and nights in low 30's right now. Thanks -

Hi Aklinda,
I would keep newly planted roses out of the sun for at least one week and after 1 or 2 hrs a day. After 2 weeks I give mine 1/2 a day of sun and gradually more.

You used huge containers. If a mini comes in small 4 inch pots or so mine go into one gall. pots first and a few month later when the roots are all the way down into 2 gall. This way the root system develops much faster. In the second season you could use the large container. Of course I am in Canada and your growing season is much longer, so just leave them in the big containers. I suggest that the next time you try it out and start them in 2 gall. pots.
Good luck George Mander

Thanks for your input, George. I'll leave them in the sheltered area against the house and in two weeks start gradually moving them into the light. I know now to use a smaller pot next time (and I'm sure there will be a next time).
