Too soon to autopsy?

I'm sure all of you are sick with my newbie attacks, but here's some more. ;o)

I've had a few minis for about a month now. Out of three, one is beginning to leaf, albeit slowly, another is only half greenish, and another is all brown and not flexible. Should I be worried about brown, should I cut back (I thought nursuries usually pruned before shipping, but perhaps not), or should I give the brown one up for dead?

I've been watering diligently, though not overly, I thought, and the pots had good drainage. It's still kind of early here yet, as shrubs and such are just beginning to break bud.

Also, out of curiosity (not that I'm going to do it) but what should the roots look like if I WERE to dig one up? White? Black? Skinny/stringy or thick like bean sprouts?
