mini sucker?

I bought a Parade mini rose from Trader Joe's and put it in my sunniest window. It's done well, tripling in size and putting out a new cycle of blooms. It's a bit leggy but otherwise seems healthy.

This week it put it out what I thought were basal shoots. I thought this was a good sign, but now that the leaves from the shoots are forming, I see that they are seven-leaved sprigs while the rest of the foliage is five-leaved. Do I have a sucker on my hands here? Did not think that was possible with minis. Should I wait and see or extirpate right away?

You can only get suckers if the plant is grafted. If it is an own-root plant all the growth will be of the desired variety. Most miniatures are own-root, which is why you thought they couldn't get suckers. You can tell whether your plant is grafted or own-root by looking carefully at it around the soil line. Does it have a knob from which all the good growth is coming? If so, it could be grafted. If not, it probably is own-root.

I love to buy the grocery store mini roses. What might have happened is what has happened for me.

There are usually 3 - 6 own root plants in a pot you may have a totally different plant in the pot. I have had a yellow and a white rose growing in the same pot.
