I always dig my potted roses(top edge of your pot at soil level) into my back garden for the winter. I cover them with leaves and a piece of coarse burlap fabric and small stones to hold down the leaves. Make sure your pots have drain holes and the area in your garden that you choose to overwinter them in has good drainage.
