Care for newly potted minis

| Ok, great news on my 3 potted minis - now that the flush of blooms and buds they came with are done, they have started sending out healthy new shoots (in spite of my bumbling efforts!!!). I potted them about 3 weeks ago and have not fed them yet (just lots of watering!). What would be a good fertilizing regimen to keep them healthy and blooming? I know roses in the ground (for my zone) should not be fertilized after August 1st - does the same go for potted minis? how long can I expect my minis to bloom before winter comes in?
On an aside, my 'chasin' rainbows' mini has quilled blooms -is this normal for this variety or could something else be making the blooms quill? |

| I feed the potted minis two weeks after potting them up IF they are in a potting soil that doesn't already contain fertilizer. What potting soil did you use? You can use a water soluble like Schultz or MG, I would use it every two weeks = first dose at quarter strength and then at half strength every two weeks. The continuous bloomers should bloom until frost... I will probably feed mine until Sept. 1 - some of the new growth may die back over winter which doesn't bother me. I had blooms until early Oct. on my well protected potted plants. Chasin Rainbows photos on HMF show quills. It's a decendant of Rainbow's End, which quills, too. Cheers, Michelle |

| Hi Michelle, Thanks for all the advice - I used Miracle Gro potting soil, which if I remember right had fertilizers in it already. I am just a little concerned as the new growth I am seeing doesn't have buds, just a lot of foliage. While this makes me happy too, I wonder if I should use something to encourage blooms? I also got 'live wire' and 'red minimo'- which might not be continuous bloomers? Glad to know that the quills on 'chasin' rainbows' are normal too! |
