vigorous new basal break or sucker?

I have a Jilly Jewel who's been behaving herself and doing great. Went on vacation and came back after 10 days to find a full-size-rose sized cane sprouting right up out of the center. It's as thick as my pinkie and shot up to about 16". The growth resembles JJ, and she does get bigger than tiny, but this? Anyone ever seen this happen? There is a bud on it, so I may wait and see.

Yep.....I have a few doing it. All of mine are own root so I don't worry. I'd wait and see if there's a bud.

Since nearly all miniatures are own root, most likely what you are seeing is called a 'candlelabra'. If this growth displeases you, simply snip it off at the appropriate height and new canes and growth will soon appear.
